On January 4, 1966, On Kawara began his ‘Today’ series of paintings with the date inscribed in a minimal white font on a monochromatic canvas. The series was continued for five decades addressing selected days as their own entity within the larger context of the regularised passage of time. Recalling the size and font used by Kawara, the ‘Day after day’ series shifts focus from calendar days to the speed of our planet’s rotational movement which creates our daily cycle. The speed of earth’s rotation varies with latitude from 1,670 km/h at the equator to 0 km/h at the poles. Therefore, each ‘Day after day’ painting relates to a specific town or city, with the speed carefully calculated for the rapid, yet imperceptible, movement of the earth’s rotation each and every day. |
