Fluid Borders
2024-25
Film and installation

A border is a line that has been agreed to divide one country or state from another. Whilst borders appear to be solid and unmovable on maps, physical borders often follow natural features including the fluid and ever evolving geographies of coastlines, rivers, streams and lakes.

In total there are 35 land borders between EU to non-EU nations, located from the Arctic Circle in the north to the edge of the African continent in the south. These political borders frequently follow natural water courses, ranging from the great rivers of the Rhine and Danube to small streams and hundreds of lakes which dot the Arctic frontiers.

The work ‘Fluid Borders’ brings together water, images and interviews from the EU borders into a single installation that explores our relationship with natural systems, communities and political boundaries. The work is currently in progress with water collection taking place.
