Limbo
2024 Modified queue barriers Dimensions variable |
Limbo is “a place or state of oblivion to which persons or things are regarded as being relegated when cast aside, forgotten, past, or out of date.” 'Limbo' uses retractable queue barriers to control the space. Imprinted with personal quotes from asylum seekers and refugees sourced from Steve Taylor and colleague’s study, 'Loss, Grief, and Growth', the barriers replicate the banal architecture of institutional control mechanisms and their life changing consequences. By repositioning the barriers over the course of the exhibition, the conventional static nature of the gallery space is disrupted with a network of control, reflecting the uncertainty within systems of waiting, both within physical queues and institutional systems. 'Limbo' was commissioned by the Royal College of Art, Curating Conetmporary Art; Bingning Meng, Dahee Min, Gianmarco Gronchi, Nancy Whiston, Rachel Morgan, Xinqi Li, Yuci Dai for the exhibition 'Controlled Encounter'. |
