Sediment
2025 London bricks recovered from River Thames dimensions variable |
The city of London was built on the banks of the River Thames, a large tidal river that feed the city with trade for centuries and today forms a muddy archive of the cities past. Mudlarking is the practice of searching for historical objects on the foreshore of the River Thames in London. It was historically a means to earn money for those who scavenged the foreshore for anything of value to sell, while today it is a hobby enjoyed by enthusiasts searching for histcorical objects. However, all tend to overlook the stones themselves, which are a combination of stones, boulders and bricks that have been rolled with daily tides until they resemble their natural neighbours. ‘Sediment’ is an installation that brings together a collection of London bricks that have been eroded by the River Thames until they resemble natural boulders. These bricks once formed London buildings and walls before their time in the Thames. Installed within the pattern of a brick wall, the small boulders remind us that all walls are temporary structures. |
