Over 99% of all internet data is carried around the world via submarine communications cables. These relatively thin fibre-optic cables form a web of umbilical cords carrying communications and connecting continents.‘Undercurrent’ is a section of the PAN-AM communication cable that connects Ecuador to North-America and subsequently the UK. 3D printed at 1:1 scale in Quito from files sent from London, the object echoes the hidden pathway through which it travelled. Attached to the outside of the cable are a series of marine molluscs, digital migrants from downloaded 3D library files.
